Nothing has gone as planned for Amanda Palmer. She is supposed to be performing with Jason Webley as conjoined twins Evelyn Evelyn but one conjoined twin is on a last minute plane from the USA. Her fiance, writer Neil Gaiman was also supposed to have arrived in the UK a few days ago and she was supposed to have flown down from Dublin to London, but a certain Volcano in Iceland got in the way. However thanks to her ingenuity and being an avid Twitterer, she has managed to Twitter hitch hike all the way to London.
Palmer has an eclectic fan-base. The Koko Camden‘s more regular crowd of trendy indie kids are joined by Punks with multi-coloured hair, Goths in period dress and even people in business suits having just finished work. In fact “eclectic” is very much a word associated with the ex-Dresden Dolls singer and pianist. Her music straddles a few different genres which is why her and her previous band mate Brian Viglione named their unique style of music “Brechtian Punk Cabaret” – the only name they felt suitably fit their music. Amanda’s solo album “Who Killed Amanda Palmer” was released in 2008 just before The Dresden Dolls parted way. Although they have called this a “hiatus” rather than an all out split, it does seem that Amanda and Brian have no further plans to play as The Dresden Dolls. “Who Killed Amanda Palmer” featured the same passionate punky vocals, aggressive lyrics and beautiful cabaret piano that featured in The Dresden Dolls.
Although Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley released a preliminary Evelyn Evelyn, three track vinyl record called “Elephant Elephant” in 2007, it wasn’t until the full length self titled album was released that it was met with controversy. It was not the music that caused offence but the fact that Palmer and Webley were portraying conjoined twins, was interpreted that they were making fun of disability. As Amanda Palmer said on her blog: “our intention was not to piss people off, make fun of, or belittle anybody. That is not our style”.
